How to use – The book consists of two major parts:

Part 1: Atlases of the Human Brain in the Head

The photographs of the 1-cm thick slices and the corresponding drawings are arranged on the pages in the following way: the odd-numbered page features a photo of one side of the slice, whereas the facing even-numbered page features the other side of the same slice, so that an open book page displays the opposing surfaces of the slices as if separated by the knife.

Features:

  1. Surface anatomy of the brain (with topometric grid)
  2. Placement of all sections indicated
  3. The 1 cm slices are cut at regular intervals in all planes of sectioning.
  4. Both sides of every section are shown.
  5. All sections are accompanied by a radiograph from the same head and
  6. MR-images from a healthy volunteer showing the same plane of section.
  7. Vascular territories in the brain are indicated.

Features:

  1. Surface views of the brain prior to sectioning
  2. 69 serial microscopic (20 μm) myelin sections
  3. Placement of all sections indicated
  4. Metric stereotaxic grid system for all three dimensions
  5. Drawings of all 69 sections with detailed delineations
  6. Consistent color coding for cortex areas and individual structures allowing the user to follow structures from section to section
  7. Nissl stained sections with delineations of the thalamus and hypothalamus
  8. Screen shots of 3D reconstructions of several brain structures
  9. More than 50 publications dealing with histological,
    morphometric and histochemical findings of this peculiar brain
